The USA’s Sergino Dest has claimed to be “devastated,” following his side’s defeat to the Netherlands on Sunday, which saw the stars and stripes knocked-out of the 2022 Qatar World Cup at the final round of 16 stage.
The on-loan Barcelona fullback played in the USMNT’s 3-1 defeat to the Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands when his side were second best for most of the match.
Following their disqualification, Dest has sent a message to fan’s of the US soccer team, detailing his feelings at the moment.
“Devastated,” he posted on the social media platform, Instagram.
“As a group, we gave everything for our country but unfortunately we just came up short on the night,” he stated in the post, “I’m really proud of the team and how we battled throughout the tournament.”
Dest optimistic for 2026 World Cup
Dest continued to say that he was hopeful for his country in the next World Cup, which will be played in the US in 2026.
“There is so much talent in this group and the majority of us are still young with lots of time to develop,” he said, “In three and a half years time – Summer 2026, on home soil, we will be ready to make you all proud once again.”
“Thank you everyone for your support throughout the tournament, we felt it the whole way through,” he finished.
The player’s optimistic mood for 2026 has echoed other voices from US football. Before the World Cup, Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch told The Athletic how this Us side made him “dream,” particularly for the next World Cup in the USA.
Dest has been on loan from La Liga giants Barcelona this season, plying his trade at another giant of the European game, AC Milan. The fullback has made five appearances for Milan in Serie A while he has played four times for the Italian team in the Champions League group stages.

Transfer Speculation
The fullback would probably like to be playing more football than he has at the current Serie A champions, and after a very impressive showing for the US in the Qatar World Cup, where he notched one assist, he may find himself with several suitors in January. It was a lack of first-team action that saw Dest leave Xavi’s Barcelona initially, perhaps to compete for a place in the US team with growing competition for the fullback slot.
The Dutch-born defender has been linked with La Liga’s Valencia in recent times, a club where he should get the regular football he has been craving. the side are currently sitting in 10th place in the Spanish top flight and will most certainly be looking for reinforcements in the January transfer market.
Another loan spell for Dest could be likely, as Valencia have been struggling financially since the Covid-19 pandemic saw much of their income halted s games were played in empty stadiums. The side launched a fire-sale in the 2019 summer transfer window to raise funds, selling players such as Spanish striker Rodrigo Moreno to Leeds United for nearly 30 million GBP.
