The NFL Mediocre Quarterback Problem

The NFL has a serious quarterback problem.

The league has an abundance of top signal-callers including Josh Allen, Pat Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, and Kyler Murray are the faces of their respective franchises, a slew of no-name field generals will be under center in Week 8.

Injuries to Russell Wilson, Baker Mayfield, and Carson Wentz have thrust Brett Rypien, P.J. Walker, and Taylor Heinicke into starting roles. The trio combined to toss five touchdown passes last week.

Rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett will make his fourth career start this weekend, while former Texas Longhorns signal-caller Sam Ehlinger will start his maiden NFL game against the Washington Commanders.

A pair of field generals, Jacoby Brissett and Davis Mills, will also be directing a pair of offensive units. Brissett is replacing the suspended Deshaun Watson while Mills is the starting quarterback for the rebuilding Houston Texans.

Here is a list of mediocre quarterbacks slated to start in Week 8 of the 2022-23 season.

Brett Rypien, Denver Broncos

The undrafted Boise State quarterback completed 24 of 46 passes for 225 yards and a touchdown in a Week 7 loss to the New York Jets. Rypien has completed just 58% of his pass attempts in seven NFL games with two scoring passes and five interceptions.

Sam Ehlinger, Indianapolis Colts

The former sixth-round pick will make his first career start in Week 8 against the Commanders. Ehlinger rushed for 1,903 yards and 33 touchdowns during his collegiate career at the University of Texas. The Colts have a mediocre offensive line that has surrendered the second-most sacks this season.

P.J. Walker, Carolina Panthers

The undrafted Temple signal-caller began training camp as the Panthers’ fourth-string quarterback. Walker threw for 177 yards and two touchdowns in a 21-3 upset win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week. The third-year field general is 3-1 as a starter but has tossed two touchdown passes and eight interceptions in 144 career pass attempts.

NFL Bad Quarterback Problem

Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh Steelers

The rookie quarterback is 1-2 as a starter and enters Week 8 with two passing touchdowns and seven interceptions in four games. Pickett has completed 68.5% of his passes and has also rushed for 61 yards and a pair of scores.

Taylor Heinicke, Washington Commanders

Heinicke completed 20 of 33 passes, 201 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in the Commanders’ upset win over the Green Bay Packers in Week 7. The undrafted Old Dominion quarterback has thrown for 4,087 yards with 24 scoring passes and 19 picks in 25 NFL games, including 17 starting assignments.

Jacoby Brissett, Cleveland Browns

The seventh-year journeyman quarterback has posted a 2-4 record with 1,326 passing yards, six touchdowns, and five picks this season for the Browns. Brissett has a career 16-27 card as a starter with 42 touchdowns and 22 interceptions in 66 NFL contests.

Davis Mills, Houston Texans

The second-year quarterback threw for 302 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Texans’ Week 7 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. Mills is 3-13-1 in 17 NFL starts with 23 scoring passes and 15 interceptions.
