Sloane Stephens vs Varvara Gracheva Prediction and Odds: French Open 2023

The world number 30 Stephens caused an upset in round 1 when beating the talented Czech Pliskova easily. The world’s number 41 Gracheva had a much tougher test and needed 3 sets to progress. Will the Russian be able to advance to the next round or will Stephens be as solid as she was in the first round?

These odds from Ladbrokes were correct at the time of writing.

Gracheva to Win

The young Russian Gracheva won 2 of the previous 3 clashes vs Stephens without dropping a set. The one game she lost against the experienced American was after Gracheva wasted 4 match points. Clearly, Gracheva likes playing Stephens and the much better mobility of the Russian has given her a clear edge so far when these two have met.

The 2 are not far away from each other in the world rankings either. Stephens is 30th, while Gracheva is 41st. It’s definitely set to be a close match but we back the Russian to record another win, especially with Stephens not doing very way on clay surfaces in general.

Gracheva to Win A Set: Yes

Even if Gracheva fails to progress to round 3 we certainly back her to win at least a set. She has done so in all 3 previous H2Hs. The Russian has too many weapons that have troubled Stephens in the past and the American will need to be extra special if she manages to avoid dropping a set in this match.

Unfortunately, we think the best days for the 30-year-old Stephens are behind her already and we don’t think she can any longer contain and beat in straight sets players that can move her across the court the way Gracheva has shown can.

Sloane Stephens vs Varvara Gracheva Preview

We provide you our detailed Stephens vs Gracheva preview and the latest ATP tennis prediction. Now we also look at the two players and their recent form.

Sloane Stephens

Stephens impressed in round 1 when beating the 16th seed Pliskova 6-0, 6-4. This was probably the best display for the American so far this year and certainly her first win over a top 50 player in many months.

Stephens has been underwhelming so far on clay. She lost in round 1 in Madrid and in round 2 in Rome. In between the Masters she took part in some smaller tournaments but in both, she played she suffered defeats against players outside the world’s top 100.

Varvara Gracheva

Gracheva needed 3 sets in round 1 to beat the unseeded Hungarian Galfi. In the end, the Russian proved way too powerful in the decider and won the 3rd set 6-1.

Gracheva lost in rounds 1 both in Madrid and Rome but she has achieved some big wins already this year. The 22-year-old Russian beat top-10 players Jabuer and Kasatkina in recent months. She also achieved Grand Slam wins against both Pliskova and Kasatkina at the Australian Open in January. Gracheva is clearly on the rise in 2023 and she always plays with a lot of aggression.

Stephens vs Gracheva Head to Head

The younger Gracheva leads the H2H 2-1, with the players already facing each other off twice before this calendar year and winning one each. In Merida Stephens won dramatically after edging the 3rd set tiebreak 7-5. Then in Austin Gracheva secured a convincing 2-0 win. The Russian also won the first meeting between the players in straight sets back in 2021.
