As Liverpool look to improve their squad ahead of next season, much has been made of the club’s transfer intentions this summer and whether Jurgen Klopp will be able to lure the players he needs to Anfield.
The Liverpool manager recently discussed his team’s plans for the upcoming transfer window and how they will operate financially.
He cautioned that the Reds could be outbid for some of their targets, but maintained he remains optimistic that deals can be reached.
“We cannot buy the player then. If they are overpriced we cannot do it,” he said.
“But we will bring in players, I am pretty sure we will bring in the players we want and those who will help us. I am pretty confident of that,” Klopp told reporters.
Liverpool are also poised to lose a number of important players whose contracts have expired, so there will be plenty of room in the squad which Klopp needs to fill.
Six mainstays of the Liverpool team over the last few years are now likely to leave the club this summer. This consists of Roberto Firmino, Arthur Melo, James Milner, Adrian, Naby Keita and Oxlade Chamberlain.
Firmino, Arthur and Milner Certain to Depart Merseyside
After eight magnificent years on Merseyside, Firmino’s time at Anfield will soon come to an end. He is a Liverpool legend and the club’s longest-tenured player.
The Brazilian will bid farewell in 2020 with every significant club honor on his resume, including Liverpool’s first league championship in 30 years.
Klopp recalled the moment Firmino informed him that he would be leaving at the conclusion of his contract: “He told me, and the only other thing he said was, ‘Now I want to bring this fantastic story to a happy ending.'”
It is unknown where Firmino will go next, but he has been rumored to return to Brazil to carry out the remainder of his career.
Arthur Melo signed with the Reds in the summer and has yet to make a Premier League appearance, surely one of the worst loan periods in Premier League history.
His only appearance for Liverpool came earlier in the season during a 4-1 Champions League group stage loss to Napoli.
The Brazil international all but confirmed he would be heading back to Turin in a recent interview with Goal, where he explained: “Hopefully I have an option to say goodbye in Liverpool by playing something, to say goodbye to my team-mates, the technical committee and the fans, who have been very good to me.”
An incredible servant to Klopp’s Liverpool, Milner’s time at Anfield may be all but over if rumors are to be believed, but remarkably the 37-year-old may still have more to give the Premier League.
The versatile veteran is expected to join Brighton & Hove Albion on a free transfer this summer, bringing an end to his eight years at Anfield.
It is a testament to Milner’s quality that at his age, a number of Premier League clubs, including Liverpool’s fierce rivals Everton were reportedly keen on landing his signature.
Adrian, Keita and Oxalde-Chamberlain To Exit
The Spanish goalkeeper has had to deal with his fair share of critics during his time as a Liverpool player and in truth has quite the catalogue of errors.
As a result, it is unlikely that Klopp is in any great rush to extend Adrian’s stay beyond the end of the former West Ham shot-stopper’s current deal.
Given Caoimhin Kelleher has shown he is more than a capable deputy to Alisson and rumours of a new goalkeeper on the way, Adrian is unlikely to remain in Merseyside beyond this season.
Keita will go down as one of Klopp’s most underwhelming signings as Liverpool boss, with the midfielder falling spectacularly short of his hefty £52million fee.
Since signing from Red Bull Leipzig in 2018, Keita has missed an astonishing 84 matches die to the persistent injuries he has suffered.
There’s every chance he has already played his last game in a Liverpool shirt, given he hasn’t been seen in the Premier League since late-February as a result of another injury.
IT remains uncertain where the midfielder will depart to.
Former Arsenal midfielder Oxlade-Chamberlain has had moments of brilliance in a Liverpool shirt, but they have proved all too fleeting.
His fitness struggles have defined his Reds career and the former England international has not done anywhere near enough to be offered a new deal.
Brighton and former side Southampton have both been linked with Oxlade-Chamberlain ahead of the summer.
Liverpool are currently on a strong run of form as the end of the Premier League season draws to a close.
The side have been victorious in their last six league games and they’ve closed down arch-rivals Man United in the chase for the Champions League places.
Next up Jurgen Klopp’s men face a trip to relegation threatened Leicester City where they will be expected to win once again.
