Arsenal are reported to be mulling over a summer transfer for Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries, according to soccer outlet Football Insider.
The website reported this week that Manchester United could renew their pursuit of the 26-year-old in the offseason, with manager Erik ten Hag being a “huge fan” of the Dutch international.
Chelsea are also longtime admirers of Dumfries, but it is understood that a move is unlikely following the side’s January acquisition of Malo Gusto from Lyon.
Arsenal Lead the Chase for Dumfries
Natural centre-back Ben White has excelled as the starting right back for Arsenal this season but it is reported that Mikel Arteta is seeking another right-back with Champions League qualification a possibility for the Premier League leaders in 2023–24.
Inter’s financial difficulties could compel the Serie A giants to settle for a smaller transfer fee for Dumfries than anticipated.
According to reports, a price between £40 and £50 million could be sufficient to pry the right-back away from San Siro this summer.
Dumfries could be one of a handful of players moved by Inter, whose finances have been harmed by Milan Skriniar’s impending free transfer to Paris Saint-Germain.
Dumfries has scored two goals and dished out six assists in 31 starts for the Nerazzuri this season.
The 42-time international defender, who reportedly earns £54,000 a week until June 2025, has also excelled for the Netherlands in the European Championships in 2020 and the World Cup in 2022.
Takehiro Tomiyasu was Arteta’s first-choice right defender for the 2022-23 season, but has made only a handful of appearances.
Before to his contract expiration in June 2024, backup defender Cedric Soares left in January on loan for Fulham.
Pundit Supports Gunner’s Move for Rice Move as Links Grow
Gabby Agbonlahor has endorsed Arsenal’s pursuit of West Ham’s Declan Rice over Brighton’s Moises Caicedo this summer.
Both midfielders are attracting interest from Arsenal but Rice now appears to be the priority.
In an exclusive interview with Football Insider, the former Aston Villa striker stated that a deal for Rice, 24, “would be a statement to every other club in international football.”
Arsenal are among the Premier League clubs still after Brighton star Caicedo, despite the fact that the midfielder signed a new contract until 2027 earlier this month.
But it has also been widely reported that the Gunners are also in touch with Rice’s representatives over a possible move.
In the past year, both players have been heavily connected with moves to top-six teams, prompting their respective clubs to place price tags of approximately £100 million on them.
Arsenal currently leads Manchester City in the Premier League title battle and are inching closer to their first league title in 20 years.
“I think Rice would a better option than Caicedo,” Agbonlahor said.
“He’d add more steel into that squad,” the former Aston Villa forward stated, “He could be Arsenal’s Rodri.”
“Jorginho isn’t long-term, so I think Rice would be a great, mega-money signing,” he added.
“It would be a statement to every other club in world football. They can put a marker down, letting everyone know that they can get the big players, letting everyone know that they are back.”
