Lazio vs Atletico Madrid Predicted Lineups: Can Sky Blues hurt injury-hit Rojiblancos?

Lazio vs Atletico Madrid Predicted Lineups – Lazio host La Liga heavyweights Atletico Madrid in a thrilling opener for UEFA Champions League Group E at the Stadio Olimpico this Tuesday evening.

With both teams having shaky starts to the 2023/24 season, getting all three points to kick-start their European campaign would be a much-needed momentum booster for either side.

Lazio vs Atletico Madrid Predicted Lineups and News

Maurizio Sarri’s Lazio side have struggled to get going so far this season, suffering three losses that have left them in 15th place in the Serie A table. Amid their struggles, they are set to host an unpredictable Atletico Madrid outfit, in what will be the first-ever Champions League H2H.

Diego Simeone’s side have not endured the same torrid beginning to their own 2023/24 campaign, but haven’t really been consistent either. They put seven goals past Rayo Vallecano before the September international break, only to lose 3-0 to Valencia in their last game.

This match should be a fascinating battle of different tactics and conflicting philosophies between the two sides. While Sarri loves his side to control games and play incisive, attacking football, Simeone is notorious for shaping his Atletico side to sit deep in their defensive line and look to capitalise on any turnovers.

Team News: Lazio

Lazio are likely to have a fully fit squad available for this crucial game, as they look to begin their Champions League campaign in the best possible way. Summer signing Matteo Guendouzi is in line to get his first start for the club in this key game after arriving just before the summer transfer deadline day.

There could also be a Champions League debut for attacking midfielder Daichi Kamada, who scored the decisive goal in their win over Napoli earlier this month. Meanwhile, Lazio’s most expensive summer signing, Taty Castellanos, is likely to start this one from the bench.

Team News: Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid are having the worst possible luck with injuries. Thomas Lemar sustained a nasty knee injury in Atletico’s 3-0 loss to Valencia at the weekend, and he is now expected to miss months of action for Simeone’s side. Atletico will also be without commanding midfielder Rodrigo de Paul, who sustained a leg injury during international duty with Argentina.

Memphis Depay is also still out of action since sustaining a muscle injury in that 7-0 thrashing of Rayo Vallecano last month. Club captain Koke should be back in contention to feature in this game though, after recovering from a hamstring injury sustained earlier this season. Jose Gimenez is also ready to start against Lazio after coming off the bench against Valencia.

Can Antoine Griezmann win another game for Atletico Madrid?

Due to injuries ravaging his side, Simeone is likely to put his hopes on influential forward Antoine Griezmann to be Atletico Madrid’s saviour once again. The Frenchman is like a one-man army in their attacking line for now, and the one everyone else looks towards when it comes to creating chances.

Griezmann, who contributed 31 goals in La Liga for his side last season, looks to rediscover his majestic touch and run the show for Atletico. If the 32-year-old World Cup winner can truly find his mojo, he can torment the shaky Lazio backline and help his side run riot at the Stadio Olimpico.
