Ward-Prowse Transfer News: Liverpool eye £25m Southampton star after Mount snub

Liverpool are in desperate need of several new faces ahead of the new campaign, with the Reds enduring a difficult season in all competitions last time out.

Jurgen Klopp’s men finished fifth in the Premier League table, winning just half of their 38 matches, drawing 10 and losing nine.

Things were looking much worse for the Reds at one point, but a strong run towards the end of the campaign saw them clinch a spot in next season’s Europa League.

The cup competitions meanwhile were not enjoyable for the Merseyside outfit, with Liverpool falling in the fourth round of both the FA Cup and League Cup.

And in the Champions League, they fell at the round of 16 to old enemies Real Madrid, in a 6-2 aggregate loss that hurt Klopp’s men badly.

But there is still optimism around Anfield ahead of next season, with the manager already making moves in the transfer window with the signature of Brighton and Argentina star Alexis Mac Allister.

The midfielder enjoyed a superb campaign for the Seagulls, as well as helping his nation lift the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in December.

He will definitely improve Liverpool’s midfield, but Klopp needs more faces in there given the losses of James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who are all leaving this summer upon the expiry of their contracts.

Liverpool eye Ward-Prowse

One player that Liverpool are reportedly targeting is Southampton star James Ward-Prowse, who has just been relegated from the Premier League with the Saints.

The Daily Mail claim that the Reds are willing to play the waiting game regarding the Southampton captain, who they could land for £25million.

It would represent a much cheaper alternative to Chelsea star Mason Mount, who is seemingly close to either choosing Manchester United as his next destination, or will see out the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge.

Mount would, of course, be a great addition to the Liverpool midfield, with the Reds currently relying on the likes of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Thiago as their experienced players in that area.

But not all have been in form in recent times, with youngsters Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott and Stefan Bajcetic definitely in need of some senior figures to help them progress.

Ward-Prowse

Ward-Prowse perfect for Liverpool

As mentioned, Liverpool can definitely snap up Ward-Prowse for a relatively low figure this summer, with Southampton not really holding any power in any potential deal following their relegation from the Premier League.

Their captain is far too good to be playing Championship football, and he will undoubtedly have one eye on his England career, particularly given the major tournaments coming up in the near future.

It is very unlikely that his Three Lions career can progress in the Championship, while Ward-Prowse knows he would be handed a regular playing spot if he made the switch to Anfield.

His talents when it comes to passing and tackling are not to be overlooked, but it is, of course, his set-piece ability that would get Liverpool fans very excited.

One can only imagine how much Ward-Prowse could thrive in a talented team, having registered nine goals and four assists in a struggling Southampton side that finished rock bottom of this season’s Premier League table.
