Who is in Arsenal’s Champions League group?

The Gunners have been placed in Group B, alongside Sevilla, Lens and of course, PSV, who could pose a real threat to the north Londoners if they can hit form.

While PSV have begun the 2023/24 campaign well, Sevilla are struggling for results, having lost three of their opening four La Liga games. Consequently, they sit in 17th place, as the domestic malaise that dogged them last season persists.

A similar narrative can be said for Lens, who are bottom of Ligue 1 after five games, drawing one and losing four in what has been a terrible start to the season for the French outfit.

With many considering this latest Arsenal v PSV clash to be a major factor in determining the Group B winners, this has the potential for high drama and tension right through to full-time.

Arsenal v PSV stats – Opposition analysis

Gunning to restore hurt pride

It wasn’t long ago that the two sides met in European competition, as they were paired together in Group A of the Europa League last season.

Arteta’s side were left with a bitter taste in their mouth following their last encounter with PSV, losing 2-0 away from home in the Europa League in October, where the Dutch side dominated proceedings.

It was only a week prior to the defeat that the Gunners were 1-0 victors over PSV at the Emirates. As the scoreline suggests, it was a close encounter, showing just how threatening Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s side were despite their underdog tag.

How good are PSV right now?

While Van Nistelrooy’s squad posed a threat, Arteta will be going head to head with Peter Bosz on Wednesday, who became head coach in the summer.

Currently, PSV are ranked the top side in Eredivisie by WhoScored’s rankings, with their form seeing them sit top of the league on goal difference, having won their opening four games.

The most prominent factor in PSV’s form so early in the campaign is that they’ve only conceded one goal in the league, making them the team to beat in the opening stages of the season.

Away from their league form, the Dutch side took the qualifying route to gain entry into the Champions League draw, which they did in emphatic fashion over two legs against Rangers.

Bosz’s side won 7-3 on aggregate, drawing 2-2 in the first leg before then demolishing the Scots 5-1 on home turf to waltz through to the Promised Land.

Who is PSV’s best player?

It was Joey Veerman that haunted Arsenal last October, and his start to this season has painted the picture that he could be a huge problem for the Gunners once again.

The Dutch midfielder scored in the fixture between the two in the Netherlands, and has been PSV’s shining light so far this campaign.

The 24-year-old already has 10 goal contributions to his name in 2023/24, having scored three and assisted seven in all competitions.

In the Eredivisie, Veerman has one goal and four assists in four appearances, fused with his form in the Champions League qualifiers, where he netted two goals and registered three assists in four appearances.

With a Sofascore average match rating of 8.60 in the league so far, midfield warrior Declan Rice will be set for a busy evening trying to dim the shine of PSV’s star man.

Arsenal v PSV stats – The Gunners’ Goal-getters

After scooping player of the match in our Arsenal vs Man Utd player ratings, Rice should dictate the midfield tempo. But everything points to any of this trio applying the killer touch.

Gabriel Jesus

The Brazilian will be hoping to restore his place in the starting XI after suffering an early injury blow, having seen him feature from the bench in his three Premier League appearances so far.

Bukayo Saka

The PFA’s Young Player of the Season was a standout performer last term, and has started this campaign in similar fashion, scoring two and assisting two in his opening four Premier League appearances. He should dominate the right flank in midweek.

Martin Odegaard

Like Saka, Arsenal’s captain Martin Odegaard was a star last season, and also has two goals already in the Premier League. The Norwegian is the perfect individual to dictate the tempo and unleash his innate playmaking skills, making him the hub to the Gunners’ creativity.

Arsenal v PSV stats – Final Word

Arsenal will have to be resilient in their return to the Champions League, with the stage set for the Emirates to play host to a blockbuster opening fixture in Group B.

The group stages have been kind to the Gunners in the past, with the Londoners advancing frequently to the Round of 16. But there is no doubt that they face a significant test in their welcome back to the competition on Wednesday.
