St Johnstone to finally win

That’s right we kick off our predictions for St Mirren vs St Johnstone by backing the away side to run their nine game winless run. On the surface ‘nine games without a win’ sounds awful but six of those matches have been draws along with four of them being European qualification ties, which are notably tougher than the League Cup fixtures where St Mirren have recorded their only four wins in 10. St Mirren were walloped last weekend and could be feeling fragile. That and the fact St Johnstone beat them in this fixture in May gives us confidence in our tip.

A low scoring match

It would be easy to look at the number of goals St Mirren’s matches have served up in recent weeks and plump for an over 2.5 bet. The thing is, that’s so heavily weighted by the fact they shipped six to Celtic last week. If you look at what they’ve contributed to matches then it’s just six goals in five matches. St Johnstone are hardly a goal getting machine either with four goals scored in their past five games; their last four have all been under 2.5 goals too. Still not convinced? Take a look at the head to head, three of the past five meetings have been south of the all important cut off too.

There won’t be much in it

In our first two tips we’ve backed St Johnstone to win and explained that both teams are lacking in the goal scoring department. As a result, we come to the conclusion that a 1-0 away win could well be a smart bet. If you focus purely on domestic form, St Johnstone have conceded just three goals in their last five games; they’re a hard side to breakdown. When you consider St Mirren are averaging just 1.2 goals per match in their last five it’s hardly likely to give the visiting defenders sleepless nights; if St Johnstone can nick a goal then there is every chance they see it out.

St Mirren vs St Johnstone: A neutrals nightmare?

St Mirren

It wasn’t so long ago that St Mirren were on a seven game unbeaten run. It feels like a lifetime ago for their fanbase now though and it’s quickly turned into four matches without a win. Last weekend was a disaster and wasn’t helped by the dismissal of Alan Power in the 18th minute; he’ll miss this match through suspension. The good news for the hosts is that defender Charles Dunne could be back after injury.

St Johnstone

St Johnstone had a time to forget in midweek. They went into their home tie with LASK after picking up a credible draw in Austria a week ago but, when it unravelled, it unravelled quickly with a 13 minute spell seeing two goals against and red cards for David Wotherspoon and Shaun Rooney. The loss not only ended European hopes but extends their winless run to nine games. They need a calm and experienced head to settle things down in this winnable match; is Murray Davidson that man?
