Los Angeles Win

LA have been one of the top teams in the MLS in recent years, making the playoffs in all 3 of their years in the league and having the best regular season record from both East and West Conferences in 2019. Austin have lost 2 of the 6 friendly games played in preparation for the opening game. Team chemistry in a competitive atmosphere is something Austin will have to build over time, whilst LA already have continuity with the same manager for 4 years.

Total Goals Over/Under: Under 3.5 Goals

Despite finishing 7th last year in a 12-team conference, LA still had the record in the West for goals scored with 47 goals (2.14 goals per game). With a golden boot winner in the team in Diego Rossi and the MLS MVP of the year prior in Carlos Vela, LA have goals in abundance in this team and will show it. Austin’s lack of experience and pedigree will ensure they struggle to score in their first MLS game as a team, especially against such distinguished opposition.

Halftime/ Full Time: Los Angeles/ Los Angeles

LA have many variables in their favor coming into the first game of the league season; with home advantage, experience, recent silverware and goals all on their side. Austin, on the other hand, are simply an unknown quantity. The preseason games have gone well, but preseason is such for a reason. LA feeling more comfortable as a team in familiar settings will help secure the win.

Los Angeles vs Austin Preview and Team News

Los Angeles

LA are managed by former USMNT Head Coach Bob Bradley. Bradley, who has been at the helm since 2017, has over 20 years of managerial experience in men’s football and 4 major trophies won in the MLS with the 2019 Supporters’ Shield his sole trophy for Los Angeles. The West Coast side have a fully fit squad coming into the tie. Uruguayan striker Diego Rossi won the MLS Golden boot last season with 14 goals in 19 games, and will aim to carry on his good form into the new season.

Austin

This tie will be Austin manager and former USMNT forward, Josh Wolff’s first game in charge of a senior team. Wolff was previously an assistant coach for the USMNT, Columbus Crew and D.C United. Austin will be missing some experience for the opening game, with veterans such as 30-year old forward Aaron Schoenfeld and 32-year old utility man Hector Jimenez expected to miss out on this tie.
