It might only be a friendly but when two of Asia’s biggest nations come up against each other it is rarely that. Here we take a look at the Japan vs South Korea match preview along with some free tips and predictions along the way.

Our top free tips for Japan vs South Korea

Making predictions on friendlies can sometimes be tough with the nature of starting XI’s being experimental and the multitude of subs that are allowed. We think our free tips have you well covered though.

Japan to win

Our first prediction is for Japan to win. Now, it’s not a gospel rule with a couple of comfortable victories going either way in the past but, typically, Japan and South Korea tend to be hard to separate. Japan recorded an impressive 1-0 win over a strong Ivory Coast side towards the back end of 2020. With all that in mind, we’re backing Japan to emerge victorious from the duos latest encounter.

Under 2.5 goals

We’ve already touched on the fact these two teams generally compete in tight affairs; the same is true on the goal-scoring front. Of their last 10 head to head matches, only four have seen more than 2.5 goals and two of them only had three in the game. Combine that with South Korea lacking their biggest attacking threat in Son Heung-Min and Japan expected to start with the young yet impressive Takehiro Tomiyasu and it’s tough to see Japan’s goal bulging too much. Going in the other direction, Japan haven’t scored more than one goal in a game since December 2019; they’ve played five matches since.

Japan to win 1-0

As if by magic, by taking the views expressed in the two other tips we’ve already narrowed the scoreline down somewhat. Now it comes to calling it outright and we’re plumping for a 1-0 Japan victory. Why? Well, they don’t concede a shed load with three clean sheets in their last five and then there is the lack of goal threat they carry. In the same five fixtures, they’ve scored just three. We expect they’ll have enough to get over the line against a weakened South Korea – but only just.

Japan vs South Korea Preview: A Clash of East Asian Giants

Japan

Hajime Moriasu’s men are not an easy side to breakdown with Tomiyasu the energetic youngster next to the experienced head of captain Maya Yoshida. In an attacking sense, they can struggle to cut teams open but they do boast individuals with star quality. Two names to look out for are Ritsu Doan and Takumi Minamino,

South Korea

The main team news where South Korea are concerned is the absence of Son. He injured his hamstring playing for his club, Tottenham Hotspur. That means any attacking threat will likely come through Kang-in Lee of Valencia or Bordeaux striker Hwang Ui-Jo who is averaging a goal every three games in Ligue 1 this season.
