Iceland to Win

Even though Romania has lost four matches in succession and Iceland have claimed two wins in the same period, it is difficult to pick a winner out of the two. The quality of opposition has been different and hence the results. However, we are backing Iceland to claim the three points on offer owing to home advantage. Our judgement is also skewed in their favour following their win over the Tricolors in their last meeting in October 2020.

Under 2.5 Goals

All three prior meetings between Iceland and Romania have seen at least three goals on the night. That will not be the case as they meet in this World Cup Qualifier. Both teams are in dire need of points and will be cautious in their approach. A win will bring them in the reckoning of the top-two spots, and they can ill afford to go gung-ho in this fixture.

Both Teams to Score: No

Romania swatted aside the challenge of Iceland in their previous qualifying fixtures, claiming successive 4-0 results at the Boys’ expense. However, both sides have had issues at the back, but have seen two of their last four matches where only one side has scored. Romania has been shut out twice, while Iceland has been fortunate enough to hold their lines once.

Iceland vs Romania Fixture Preview

Iceland

Arnar Viðarsson’s men impressed in the last qualifying campaign for the FIFA World Cup and more of the same is expected from them. With Germany struggling to give their best, the second qualifying slot is open for grabs and is currently in the hold of North Macedonia. Iceland will surely have their eyes set on it and will need to give a good account of their abilities against Romania at home turf.

Romania

While traditional powerhouses are struggling in Group J, Armenia is leading the qualification race. Romania came close to beating them but was unsuccessful in a 3-2 attempt. They can ill-afford to drop more points in the race, especially with a lingering negative goal difference. Mirel Rădoi will want Vlad Chirches and co. to relive their 4-0 win over Iceland back in September 1997 to bridge the gap at the top of the points table.
