Goals on both sides

Both teams are in great shape and had the best and third-best scoring record of 102 goals for Ajax and 74 goals for PSV in Eredivisie last season. They have also been exceptional in pre-season fixtures and while PSV played only three pre-season matches compared to seven for Ajax, they have scored a total of 10 goals in three UCL qualifiers played through late July and early August.

Ajax to open the scoring

We are tipping Ajax to open the scoring in this match. They have always been the better side in previous meetings. Moreover, PSV still has its focus on UCL qualifiers and may not turn out 100% for this fixture even though the chance to bag silverware before the new season kick-off is tempting.

Total goals: Over 2.5

We are also tipping more than two goals in this fixture. These teams have the best-attacking prowess in Eredivisie and have continued to score lots of goals in their last five games even before the new season kicks off.

Match Preview: Ajax Looking for the Second Victory over PSV in Cruijiff Cup Finals within Two Years

Ajax was the better side when they played against PSV in the Johan Cruijiff finals back in July 2019. In that game, Ajax had five shots on target while PSV had no shots on goal. Erik ten Hag was the Ajax manager back then and remains at the helm as he prepares to meet PSV manager, Roger Schmidt, for the second time in the Johan Cruijiff final within two years.

While both sides were nearly at par in passing accuracy (81% against 78%), including aerial duels, Ajax was the better side in tackles and interceptions in the 2019 Johan Cruijiff final. Moreover, Ajax had two counter attack shots while PSV had none. Ajax comes to this game with a better record of 8W, 4D and 5L in the previous 17 meetings with PSV since January 2014. They have had an impressive run of 4W and 3D in seven pre-season games, during which they registered three clean sheet victories.  They are also unbeaten in the last sixteen matches. Also, note that Ajax manager, Erik ten Hag, averages 2.34 points in 167 games.

PSV finished second last season, 16 points below Ajax that topped the league. With UCL qualifications fixtures still underway, PSV manager, Roger Schmidt, expects a tense fixture with a squad that is already overstretched by a tight scheduled. PSV has played three UCL qualifier matches and won all of them. After the Johan Cruijiff against Ajax in four days, they will play Midtjylland in round three of UCL qualifiers three days later. Moreover, Roger Schmidt is wary of the fact that he is yet to defeat Ajax head coach after bagging 2D and 1L in three meetings. This will be a real test PSV and despite going unbeaten in the last 13 matches, the PSV head coach must be hard-pressed to balance his squad ahead of this game and another UCL qualifier.
