Lincoln to progress

Shrewsbury arrived in their season opener off the back of three pre-season wins on the spin but despite that good run they still succumbed to defeat meaning they’ve lost two of their last five. Lincoln meanwhile lost their last pre-season match 2-0 but then took an away point on opening day; they too have two defeats in their past five. With regards to their head to head record, the duo faced one another in the league last year and both games ended 1-0 to the away side. There really is very little to choose between the sides. Lincoln played a few extra friendly matches though and they could be that little bit sharper hence we think they’ll advance – even if they don’t do the business in 90 minutes.

A low scoring match

Our next prediction is that this match won’t contain many goals. We’ll ignore pre-season as we analyse the form of both teams in this regard and instead focus on their last five competitive matches. Shrewsbury have come up short of the 2.5 mark in three of their past five, which happens to be the same number as Lincoln. In terms of how those five matches stack up in terms of goal averages, things read pretty well too. Shrewsbury’s average is 2.4 total goals per match with Lincoln are even shorter at a round 2.0 per match. Given four of the last five head to head games – including the last two – have seen a two goal maximum as well then this should be a sound bet.

Daniel Udoh to find the net

We know we’ve just predicted that the game will be one of few goals but that doesn’t mean it won’t see the net bulge at all. 24-year-old Shrewsbury forward Daniel Udoh only netted five goals last season but his time on the pitch was rather limited in terms of pure minutes. He played 90 and scored on the final day though and netted in every pre-season match before getting the nod to complete another 90 minutes in game week one. If he plays on Tuesday then he will be the form scorer on the pitch.

Shrewsbury vs Lincoln: A tight match but Lincoln to edge through

Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury’s season got off to a poor start with a 1-0 home defeat but their performance wasn’t all bad. They’ve shown in pre-season that they are a capable football side and with Daniel Udoh in good form they have someone who can find the net. If new signing Matthew Pennington can help to keep things tight at the back then they have a real chance of progress.

Lincoln

Lincoln arrived in the new campaign off the back of a loss and their pre-season form wasn’t great in terms of results. What they did do though is play plenty of games and against some decent opposition; it should stand them in good stead for the months ahead and an away point in game one of the season isn’t the worst result. They’ll want to win the match on Tuesday but it will be an opportunity to get more minutes in the legs too; expect Teddy Bishop to start.
