Michigan Sports Betting Laws & Regulations

Legal Sports Betting Brick-and-Mortar Casinos

There are a total of twenty-six casinos in the state of Michigan. Three of them are owned by commercial brands and the other twenty-three are owned and operated by Native American tribes. Due to the number of available “skin” slots in the state, some of the brands may overlap in the various casinos, but there is still plenty of places you can place a bet offline and online. Currently, only twelve casinos have acquired licenses to provide retail sports betting, but we expect more will follow in the future.

How Did Sports Betting Become Legal in Michigan?

Michigan lawmakers made a fast decision and at the beginning of March 2020, legal retail sports betting was launched. Two casinos were fast and they took their first sports bets on the 11th of Match 2020, and those casinos were MGM Grand Detroit and Greektown Casino Hotel. Unfortunately, due to circumstances, no one could control Casinos had to shut down and the industry in the state wasn’t expanding as it should have been.

During the rest of 2020, ten more Casinos got licenses to provide retail sports betting. Now the state was focusing on providing online sports betting as fast as possible, but the process of introducing a bill and refining all the rules and regulations is long. The first batch of approved Michigan online sports betting providers and operators were launched on the 22nd of January 2021.

Michigan introduced an iGaming package bill (HB 4916), to legalize sports betting, fantasy sports, online casino games, etc. Some of the key features you may find interesting are:

  • Only one skin per casino is allowed.
  • The tax on adjusted gross of sports betting is 8.4%, while three casinos will pay an additional 1.25% tax.
  • The funds acquired via the tax revenue will go to the School Aid Fund and the First Responder Presumed Coverage Fund.
  • Michigan requires the use of “official league data.”
  • Only fifteen skins will be available in the whole state of Michigan.
